Description:
Acquisition and application of professional vocabulary; mastering English word formation in the language of dentistry and medicine, with an emphasis on the necessity of knowing suffixes and prefixes of classical origin; mastering linguistic structures specific to the language of dentistry; understanding the complexities of collocations, false friends, compound noun structures, synonyms, homonyms, homophones, eponyms, and antonyms; acquiring and practicing the passive voice and indirect questions through functional-semantic communicative activities. Systematic instruction in writing presentations and abstracts, which includes model presentation, feature analysis, guided writing, and ultimately independent writing of these demanding written forms; developing language skills for receptive language use (listening and reading comprehension); applying general English to the professional language of dentistry; practicing independent public speaking in English; practicing communication with patients; developing critical thinking skills; participating on the Merlin platform as part of interactive teaching, where students complete tasks and write summaries of scientific and professional papers; establishing habits for more successful use of grammar books, dictionaries, and other linguistic manuals.
Students are expected to master English language norms at the lexical, orthographic, grammatical, and semantic levels. They are expected to communicate successfully in English within the dental profession. Additionally, students must master all forms of oral and written expression, such as explaining, describing, commenting, retelling, and summarizing. They are also expected to be capable of writing a CV, writing abstracts of scientific papers, and recording video clips in the form of a dialogue between a dentist (or medical specialist) and a patient.
Students should acquire the skills of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking, and writing in professional dental English. They are expected to successfully utilize professional terminology and phraseology.
